About the event:

On November 8th, we invite you to enter The Breath Between, a new audiovisual installation by artist duo Philip & Daphne, produced in collaboration with MONOM and 4DSOUND.
At its core, the work unfolds through holographic spatial sound, projection mapping, and Hypervision holograms. The sound is derived entirely from live piano recordings performed by Philip-Jongdo An, based on Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana — a Romantic masterwork that distills the composer’s inner landscape. The sound begins with live piano recordings of Schumann’s Kreisleriana transformed through spatial sound processing into a multi-layered field of resonance. In dialogue, the visual language of Moving Sculpture expands into light and immaterial form. Within Philip&Daphne’s shared breath, sound and image converse as one language, shaping an immersive sphere that enfolds the audience.

Meanwhile, the visual element emerges from Daphne-Jiyeon Jang’s research into Moving Sculpture, which explores the boundary between the material and immaterial. Through a process of Digital Re-Unification, light and form become suspended within space, resonating with sound in a dialogue of shifting density.

The work has an approximate duration of 15 minutes. Attendees may reserve a slot between 18:00–20:00 or 20:00–22:00 and visit at any time within their selected window.

About the work:

The Breath Between is an immersive audiovisual installation by Philip&Daphne, created in close collaboration with 4DSOUND (Amsterdam) and MONOM (Berlin).

Philip&Daphne treat the vibrations of sound and the invisible signals drifting through the air as sculptural material, condensing and shaping them into new forms. Their practice extends beyond audiovisual perception toward time-spatial installations, aiming to evoke a sense of existence beyond the senses. In this work, sound and visual are not conceived as parallel layers but as a shared breath, unfolding as a single language.

The work begins with pianist and sound artist Philip-Jongdo An’s embodied act of live piano performance. Playing Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana (1838) — a Romantic masterwork that condenses the composer’s inner world — he generates the raw sonic matter of the piece. These recordings are not treated as fixed documents but as living gestures, compressed, split, twisted, and reconfigured through his spatial sound art practice. Expanded via the 4DSOUND system, they unfold into a multidimensional sphere of resonance, where the intimate touch of the piano transforms into architectures of collective emotion that surround the audience.

Daphne-Jiyeon Jang, a media artist rooted in sculpture, extends sculptural thought into immaterial  light and form. Through her concepts of Moving Sculpture and Digital Re-Unification, projection mapping and Hypervision holograms emerge as drifting structures, suspended like emotional traces in space. Cast onto hemp cloth — a material symbolically tied to birth and death — these projections weave fragility into the visual field. Butterflies appear as emblems of human vulnerability, while mythological figures such as Artemis and Iphigenia, or Prometheus bound to eternal punishment, surface as fractured archetypes of desire, sacrifice, and longing. Within this invisible architecture, sound and light share one breath, unfolding as a living structure at the threshold between life and death, presence and absence.

A Sphere of Layered Emotions — and Beyond

At the heart of The Breath Between lies the layered and paradoxical nature of love. Love may appear as a source of hope, yet from another angle it reveals itself as desire, possession, or wound. When bound to community or ideology, it can fracture human society and provoke profound crises. The work reflects on how these waves of love are remembered, distorted, and come to govern human existence. Philip&Daphne envision love as a spherical structure—impossible to perceive in its entirety. From each vantage point, the sphere reveals only a fragment: hope, longing, pain, or Silence.

Through these shifting cross-sections, the audience encounters not only the essence of feeling itself but also the fractures of contemporary human experience. Beyond the simple depiction of emotion, the work unfolds as an artistic inquiry into thresholds — between presence and absence, silence and resonance, the individual and the collective.

About the artists:

Philip&Daphne is an immersive art collective formed by pianist and sound artist Philip-Jongdo An and media artist Daphne-Jiyeon Jang. Together, they merge sound, light, and form into time- spatial installations that evoke a sense of existence beyond sensory experience. Their works integrate 4DSOUND, Hypervision holograms, and projection mapping, creating immersive environments where sound and image breathe as one.

Philip-Jongdo An

An is an internationally acclaimed pianist, sound artist, and founder and creative director of Studio Philip An, a production platform for interdisciplinary performance. Since winning top prizes at the 2012 Long-Thibaud International Piano Competition in Paris, he has collaborated with major orchestras including the London Symphony, Radio France Philharmonic, and Hamburg Symphony. His practice bridges classical tradition with AI-based sound mapping, immersive spatial audio, and media art, transforming live piano performance into multi-dimensional resonant environments. Beyond performance, he has directed cross-genre productions such as the Franco-Korean music theater Phèdre and served as music director for the Daejeon Arts Center’s Bach Abend. As a writer, he has contributed nearly 100 cultural essays to Economy Chosun, exploring the intersections of music, society, and aesthetics. He is currently Professor of Piano at Yonsei University.

Daphne-Jiyeon Jang

Jang is a media artist with a sculptural foundation, known for her signature concepts of Moving Sculpture and Digital Re-Unification, which dissolve the boundary between material and immaterial. Her installations and media façades have been presented internationally at Talbot Rice Gallery (UK), Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris), and UNESCO World Heritage Suwon Hwaseong. In Korea, she has been recognized through the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s UnfoldX program and Paradise Art Lab, and has also created large-scale public media works at Incheon International Airport. She was awarded the Keith Prize from the Royal Scottish Academy (UK), and her works are represented in the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. Through collaborations with platforms such as SONY and Hypervision, she continues to expand sculpture into digital, site-specific, and immersive narratives that merge history, technology, and human experience.

Together, Philip&Daphne embody a shared breath between sound and image — a dialogue where piano becomes light, sculpture becomes resonance, and audiences are immersed in the fragile yet powerful space in between.

About MONOM

Founded in 2017, MONOM is home to the original 4DSOUND system, this technology, is an intuitive instrument for composing virtual sonic realities. These new worlds of sound are designed not only to be heard, but to be felt with the whole body. From sound art and music to theater, opera, dance, and the immersive realms of virtual and augmented realities, our mission is to provide space and time for anyone who wants to expand the dimensions of their creative practice and to enrich communal and individual experiences of sound and art.

Through our various partnerships, we aim to foster a multicultural and cross-disciplinary movement centered around spatial sound and listening-based practices. We believe in the potential of this art form to transcend cultural divides through a common language of sound and space. Our network serves as a conduit for the exchange of ideas and collaborations worldwide, forging a tightly-knit community founded on the profound act of embodied listening—a practice we hold to be increasingly vital for our collective well-being.
Collaborating with over 200 artists, our work comes alive in spaces designed to amplify sonic and spatial arts exploration. These range from bespoke listening rooms to festival stages and cutting-edge museums. MONOM’s work has been featured by Barbican Immersive (coming soon), CTM Festival, MUTEK, The New York Times Climate Forward, D’stric, Google, Earth Rise, Reethaus, Mercer Labs: Museum for Art and Technology, COP26, and more.
