SPATIAL Festival

Spatial

SPATIAL is a three-day festival for Spatial Sound, Music, Art and Technology.

Space and Time for embodied listening.

The way we perceive sound, as one of the most subtle refined and complex ways we perceive space, will be at the core of the festival’s experiences. Our “main stage” which is our large-scale 4DSOUND system will present the majority of artworks in complete darkness offering an opportunity for the listener to reorientate away from the noise, and stresses of our fragmented and polarizing screen/visual-based environments towards a uniquely embodied and expansive experience, connected to sound and space in its purest form.

With no typical stages and no best seat, the festival aims to erase the boundary between art and the audience.

WHAT IS 4DSOUND?

The 4DSOUND instrument is powered by 48 omnidirectional loudspeakers and nine subwoofers. It offers a flexible, intuitive control platform for artists from different performative disciplines to experiment and express their ideas in a new dimension. As an integrated hardware and software system, 4DSOUND creates a fully omnidirectional sound environment. The sound does not come from speakers, but from independent physical entities located in the room. The 4DSOUND system creates a social listening space where listeners and performers can interact and move freely to explore a new physical sound environment.

Lecture “The Effects of Spatial Sound on Human Wellbeing” by Paul Oomen, founder of 4DSOUND and Head of Research & Development of The Works Research Institute.

4DSOUND Masterclass by Poul Holleman, co-founder and technical director of 4DSOUND. Learn about the history, see the software in action, and gain insights on custom applications and contexts.

SPATIAL is possible thanks to the kind support of 4DSOUND, LEDULSE & The Node Institute Berlin

How to experience the Festival?

Spatial aims to provide a safe space for communal embodied listening.

We are committed to building bridges between as many cultures, disciplines and mediums as possible through a common language of Spatial Sound.

We will feature more than 50 pioneering artists from a wide range of disciplines, as well as educators and experts in immersive technologies and media.

We welcome anyone who wants to be part of our community without distinction.

Low-income tickets will be available upon request, as well as free tickets for refugees.

Spatial Festival will not tolerate any form of abuse, harassment or discrimination.

It is our goal to create a safe space where our visitors can freely indulge in the experience of being in silent communion with others.

There will be only enough light in case someone needs to leave during the experience.

For an enhanced listening experience bring your favourite sleeping mask or blindfold, or purchase one of our Spatial homemade blindfolds.

Being in silence and in stillness is a privilege, we ask visitors to be aware of the silent zones in the venue surrounding the studio and not to speak during the sessions to respect the journey of others.
